The main objectives of the network are: the creation at a European level of a common platform for cultural heritage and the availability of a virtual museum which will allow visitors to choose their own flexible geometry of paths through the exhibition space. It will be accessible all over the world via the Internet and will encourage young people to closely examine, protect and value their own and other peoples' culture. The network will benefit the following target groups: students and teachers in schools, libraries, cultural centres, museums, universities, research and training centres and, more in general, the virtual community of Internet users. The main outcome of the project is the development of a new concept of museum seen as both a physically flexible place and a virtual space. The visitor will enter a common space where he can find, at his disposal, general information about the project, its philosophy and the possibility of exchanging ideas with the network. The contributions of the ten participating countries will be organized within wide thematic areas, all related to cultural heritage, and called thematic pavilions. Are you interested in 'e-walking' through our national identities, our common memory, our citizenship? You'll find traces of our past and present cultures, which will reveal individual national identities within a common European framework. A special section, within each pavilion, is the virtual library where all Socrates projects, already finished or underway, can be easily disseminated to a wider audience.

New learning in Europe – what makes pupils/students learn better?
The schools involved in the project: “New learning in Europe” are asking themselves: “ What makes pupils/students learn better?”. They want to anticipate on the educational development in Europe to give more self-responsibility to pupils for their learning. One of the consequences of this development is, that the role of the teacher is changing. The traditional focus on instructing pupils will develop into a way of teaching that focuses more and more on guiding pupils during their learning processes. A good means in enhancing this development is the use of ICT.
The participating schools in this project wish to compare the results of these processes in the schools by having evaluations on a regular basis and bringing the coordinators and the participating teachers into contact with each other . This will result in a continuing development in the schools of new ways of learning and in setting up several projects to stimulate the use of new learning methods and strategies, new methods of self-evaluation, and the development of criteria and standards for good learning and teaching processes.
